USC Press launches US Rep. James Clyburn memoir

{}{} COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina Press is publishing U.S. Rep. James Clyburn's memoir and hosting a signing event at the Hollings Library on the university campus.{}{} University spokeswoman Peggy Binette says Monday evening's event in Columbia is free and open to the public.{}{} The memoir is titled, "Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black."{}{} It details Clyburn's journey as a civil rights leader from the Jim Crow-era South to the Washington beltway.{}{} Clyburn is a native of Sumter and has represented South Carolina's sixth district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1993.{}{} He was South Carolina's first African-American congressman in nearly a century and serves as assistant Democratic leader of the House.
