      Victim identified in fatal three car accident on Highway 17

      CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston County Coroner's Office releases the identity of the man killed in an accident that blocked traffic for hours Friday afternoon.

      The Sheriff's Office responded to the fatal three-car accident on Highway 17 near the Colleton County line just after 3 p.m.

      Deputies say the accident happened when a pickup truck towing a trailer traveling south jack-knifed, when it passed a Toyota SUV at a high rate of speed. After hitting the SUV, the truck then crossed over the median and collided with another car heading north.

      According to the Coroner's Office the driver of the car, 58-year-old Rodney Gause of Florida was killed and a female passenger in the car was severely injured.

      Paramedics rushed a total of three people to local hospitals, one with life-threatening injuries.

      The accident caused Highway 17 to be completely shut down at the county line in both directions for more than an hour.
