NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Father's Day is bittersweet for one North Charleston dad. He spent the day planning a vigil for his son, who was stabbed to death Wednesday.

Brandon Bennett, 18, was asleep in bed when his father said his son was attacked.

"I walked into his room and this guy was assaulting my son with a knife," said Darryl Bennett, Brandon's father.

That's when Bennett said he tried to protect his youngest boy.

"We were struggling for the knife. My son staggered with his last bit that he had in him and distracted this guy enough so that he was able to grab his arm and make him drop the knife," said Bennett.

Brandon's father then called 911. His son was rushed to Medical University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police believe the suspect is Brandon Bennett's friend, Terrell Smith.

Smith is wanted on charges of murder, attempted murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a deadly weapon.

"Brandon was his friend. Whatever he wanted from Brandon all he had to do was ask Brandon would have given it to him," said Latrease Bennett, Brandon's mother. "Everybody loved Brandon and Brandon loved everybody, I just really want to know why he would do this him and take my baby away from me."

Bennett says her son was planning on finishing school to go off to the military. Now, instead of preparing for their son's future, the Bennett's have planned a candlelight vigil in honor of their son Monday, June 15.

The memorial starts at 7 p.m. at Waterfront Park in downtown Charleston.

Brandon's parents are asking everyone to bring a candle, a blue balloon and to wear a white T-shirt.

Smith is still being sought by police. Anyone with information on where Smith can be found is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
