Widow sues relative, neighborhood in SC shooting

SHELDON, S.C. (AP) - The widow of a Florida man fatally shot during a Thanksgiving family gathering near Hilton Head Island is suing the relative charged with his death and a gated community.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Tuesday that Tracey Piotrowski accuses 68-year-old Richard Santee of not securing his weapons. Her suit also says the company that employed private security guard Charles Gary Knox was negligent and did not properly train him.

Santee's nephew, 42-year-old James Piotrowski of Stuart, Fla., died in November 2010 after being shot several times.

Authorities have said Knox shot Piotrowski after the officer saw Piotrowski shoot and wound Santee.

Santee has been charged with attempted murder. Knox was not charged. Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said he felt the officer's decision to shoot was justified.
