Police: Man takes bowling alley manager hostage, surrenders
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) - Patrons at a Goose Creek bowling alley were told to leave the building as police gathered outside, according to an eyewitness.
Charleston County Sheriff's Office officials said negotiators were sent to the Royal Lanes bowling alley in Goose Creek for a "situation," but did not go into details about their presence.
A short time later, the incident ended peacefully with one person in custody.
According to Goose Creek police, a stranger went into the manager's office and took the manager hostage. After a few minutes, the manager was released, but the stranger stayed in the office.
Police believe the stranger fired the shot.
After a brief standoff, police said the man surrendered peacefully. Police have not released the man's name.
Witness Jordan Powell said she was about to bowl when everyone heard a loud bang. She said then she could smell the gunpowder and everyone was forced outside the building.
According to Powell, there were close to two dozen people in the bowling alley at the time. Most of them were families with young children.
"We heard it and everyone froze," she said.
Powell said she thought the gunshot came from an office.
Officials said the man was being taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, but will ultimately end up in the detention center.
