MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol arrested the woman accused of crashing into and killing a teenager in Berkeley County, then leaving the scene.
Ronnie Gallardo, 17, was almost home. He was riding his bike just feet away on Highway 176 but before he could make it, Highway Patrol officials said Cassie Gelzer hit him from behind and drove away.
Since the deadly crash on March 6 the Highway Patrol has been investigating Gelzer.
"There were people chomping at the bit wanting to know about charges," said S.C. Highway Patrol Troop 6 Commander Mike Williamson.
A highway patrol team reconstructed the crash, which Commander Williamson said slowed the process.
"It takes them a little bit longer to do a thorough investigation. We have family members and everybody wanting to know the outcome. We want to make sure we get it right, especially if we are going to charge somebody," Williamson said.
Wednesday Williamson told Ronnie Gallardo's family Cassie Gelzer was arrested.
"They were very happy to know the charges were being made and someone would be held accountable for the death of their loved one," Williamson said.
Highway Patrol officials said Gelzer left after hitting Gallardo and came back to the scene with her father. They haven't given any indication why she may have left.
