Work to move ahead on Myrtle Beach sports complex
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Construction is set to begin in February on a $12 million indoor sports complex next to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that city council voted Tuesday to move forward with the plan that has been 10 years in the making.
The city received a $7 million state grant in 2005 to buy 40 acres for expansion of the center. The money was contingent on work beginning within five years or being finished in decade but the Great Recession slowed the project.
Gov. Nikki Haley recently signed a bill giving the city five more years to complete the work.
Officials say the sports facility should be finished by 2015. The complex is expected to help draw larger convention groups to the beach.
