WTMA celebrates 25 years of talk radio

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The hottest talk in town, WTMA celebrated two major milestones Monday.

It's been 25 years since WTMA switched from a country music station to its current talk radio format, and it's been nearly 75 years since it first signed on the air in 1939.

On Monday, former talk show personalities joined the current morning host for the celebration and to talk about what makes WTMA and talk radio so special.

"Lord knows Charleston is an incredible, diverse community with lots of different viewpoints. If you have one place, a talk radio station like WTMA, where they can all come together and share their opinions it's the best conversation possible," said Richard Todd.

Nancy Wolf said it was about balance.

"I think talk radio brings balance to the media," she said. "We're able to take calls from everyone, and it's the wide, diverse opinions of our callers."

WTMA will celebrate its 75th birthday later this month. Station managers promise more listener surprises for the anniversary on June 16.
