Massive sunflower seed contamination prompts even more recalls

After a national sunflower seed distributor notified their customers that their product could be contaminated, snack food manufacturers nationwide had to follow up with a rash of recalls.

The massive recall has affected grocery stores, health food manufacturers and even restaurants that serve salads with seeds in them.

SunOpta issued a voluntary recall for sunflower seeds that were processed in their Crookston, Minnesota facility between February 1, 2016 and February 19, 2016. Since May 16, SunOpta has conducted additional testing on sunflower kernels that extended beyond the original dates. They found their sunflower kernels were potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Now, even more recalls are being announced.
