Animal Society kicks off dog training classes this weekend

CHARLESTON,S.C. (WCIV) - The Charleston Animal Society willstart a new round of dog training classes this weekend at Palmetto Islands County Park.

The program starts Sunday withtraining sessions for two different age groups and will run every Sunday untilNov. 3. A second session begins Nov. 10 and runs through Dec. 22.

The first class, called SmartPuppy, is for dogs aged 16 weeks and up and focuses on basic skills, includingsocialization, puppy manners, and loose leash walking. The class will alsoteach dogs the basic commands of sit, down, stay, and drop.

"Make the most ofthis important formative period in your pup's life, and choose to do the verybest for their future by teaching them good habits from the start. Earlytraining provides your four-legged family member the best chance to become afun, confident adult dog."

The Smart Puppy classes will beheld at 3 p.m. The first session is for humans only.

The second class, Real LifeBasics, is designed for non-aggressive dogs over 20 weeks old. The class willfocus on building more trust between dog and owner and teaching owners how dogslearn.

Training will include lyingquietly, staying calmly with an owner while others pass, waiting at an opendoor and jumping out of a vehicle on cue.

The Real Life Basics class willbe held at 4 p.m. and the first class is designed for humans only.

To participate, dogs have to bevaccinated and records will be required at the first class. The 7-week classesare $154, or $140 for Charleston County residents whoregister in advance.
