As pet population blooms, adoption groups spring into action

'Heeey!' Kittens at CAS (Jenny Sanborn/WCIV)

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- With the stray animal population going through its yearly uptick, families looking to add a furry friend to their home can find great deals at local shelters. Both Pet Helpers and the Charleston Animal Society are offering discounted adoptions."This is the time of year when we traditionally experience the greatest influx of animals into our care, especially kittens," explains Joe Elmore, Chief Executive Officer of Charleston Animal Society. "We are asking the public to rally behind the community's most vulnerable animals."During their special adoption campaign, all adult dog and cat adoptions at the CAS Remount Road location are free. Kittens are "adopt one, get one free" and can also be found at the Mount Pleasant PetSmart on Long Point Road.Adoption event hours for both the shelter and PetSmart Mt. Pleasant are: --Tuesday, June 17 through Friday, June 20 - 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.--Saturday, June 21 and Sunday June 22 - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.Elmore says CAS has over 800 animals in their system and they are critically overloaded."Because we never turn local animals away, we wind up with over 90 percent of the Charleston community's homeless and abandoned animals," he said. "As part of our commitment to sustaining Charleston's status as the first No Kill Community in the Deep South, we will do whatever we can to make sure that all healthy, treatable animals find a loving home."Pet Helpers is also cutting costs to boost adoptions. All kittens are half priced during the month of June and there a couple of events planned to give families a {}chance to snuggle a furry face.Kittenpalooza is being held Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at Norp.m.oods Mall. The event is in the court outside of Dillard's and if playing with kittens wasn't enough, there's also giveaways including jewelry from Reed's Jewelers' ASPCA line. Then, the next day, Palmetto Brewing and Awendaw Green are hosting a Barn Jam to support Pet Helpers at Sewee Outpost. Half priced kittens will be available as well as food, refreshments and live music. That event runs from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.All animals available for adoption through CAS and Pet Helpers come spayed or neutered, are vaccinated, microchipped, and are eligible for a free health exam from most local veterinarians.
