Beaufort animal services agency gets $6,000 for medication

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -{}The Beaufort County AnimalServices office was awarded this week $6,000 for medication to preventheartworm prevention.

The money was granted to the animal services office as partof the Hearts on the Go campaign.

Starting Friday, 18 dogs will begin a two-day heartwormtreatment followed by a six-week recovery. After they recover, all of the dogswill be taken to the Hilton Head Humane Association to be adopted.

"With this grant from the ASPCA, vet assistance from HHHAand housing from Camp Green Dog and Evergreen Pet Lodge, these dogs will gothrough their much-needed treatment and then be up for adoption. We hope thisnew program will be one of many to come in 2014," said HHHA Director FrannyGerthoffer.

"Unfortunately 80% of the dogs over the age of 2 we receiveat the shelter are heartworm positive with the average cost of treatment being$350. This grant and teamwork between organizations really allow these dogs tohave a future and be adopted into a new family," said BCAS Director TallulahTrice.{}
