Firefighters bury dog killed in house fire

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- Firefighters from Colleton County Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire that displaced a family of three and killed the family dog.

It happened just after 4 a.m. Thursday morning on Black Creek Road. When firefighters arrived, they said there was heavy smoke and flames.

Two of the three family members were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and were soon released.

According to a assistant fire chief with the CCFR, the family dog was killed in the fire and was buried by firefighters on the scene. He says it appears the fire started in the kitchen and the home was a total loss.

American Red Cross volunteers were called and provided the family with funds to replace to food, clothing, in addition to toys, comfort kits and referrals to Red Cross partner agencies.
