Cooper River Bridge Run street closures, discounted parking announced

Just weeks away from the Cooper River Bridge Run (FILE)

The Cooper River Bridge Run will be held on Saturday, April 7, although some road closures in downtown Charleston will begin Friday, April 6.

The entire Arthur Ravenel Bridge Wonderway Lane will be closed at 6:30 a.m. to clear the bridge of pedestrian traffic until the bridge is re-opened following the race.

The race route and support streets will be closed at 7 a.m. until the participants are finished and the roadways are cleaned (approximately 11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.)

The entire Arthur Ravenel Bridge will be closed until participants have cleared the bridge and support staff have removed barricades and cleaned debris.

Traffic off King Street will be re-routed onto St. Philip Street from Spring Street and Beaufain Street. Traffic on Cannon St will turn at St. Philip and flow north or south.

City Parking Garage Special Rates for Cooper River Bridge Run Participants

From Friday, April 6 at 5 p.m. to Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m., participants in the event may park overnight at the following garages for a special rate of $5:

  • Visitor’s Center Parking Garage, on Mary Street between King and Meeting
  • S.C. Aquarium Garage, on Calhoun Street between E. Bay and Concord
  • 34 St. Philp St. Garage on Philip St between George and Liberty Streets

Road closures leading up the event:

Friday, April 6

  • Hampton Park will close at 11 a.m. at all entrances until 7 p.m. CRBR will coordinate with recreation on these closures. Volunteers will be needed.
  • George Street between Meeting and Anson Street will be closed at 10 p.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7
  • Meeting Street between George and Wentworth will close Friday, April 6, at 10 p.m. The Northbound Lane of Meeting Street from George to Calhoun will remain open; the southbound lane of Meeting Street from George to Calhoun will be closed for traffic. Traffic will be re-opened on Saturday, April 7, following Finish Line cleanup, near 2 p.m.

Saturday, April 7

  • Calhoun Street between Meeting to Anson Street will be closed to all traffic midnight to 2 p.m.; residential limited traffic only until 4:30 a.m. when the road will be closed entirely.
  • Calhoun Street, between King and East Bay Street, will be closed from 4:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. or until the Charleston Police Department re-opens.
  • George Street from East Bay Street to Anson Street from 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Anson Street from Calhoun to Society Street will be closed 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Alexander Street from Charlotte St to George Street from 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Charlotte Street from Elizabeth to Meeting Street- from 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Henrietta Street from Elizabeth to Meeting Street from 5:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Elizabeth Street from Calhoun to Charlotte Street- from 5:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Meeting Street from John to Wentworth will be closed at 4:30 a.m. with early openings happening following the race participants leaving the route and the route /being cleaned (estimated between 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.).
  • Wentworth and Society will flow until 7 a.m. unless pedestrian traffic forces early closure.

Free shuttles the morning of the race

Free shuttles will bring partiipants from five parking areas to the start of the race and will bring participants back to the parking areas following the race.

The buses will be located in the following areas: Downtown at Anson and Calhoun St.; Mt. Pleasant Towne Center, North Charleston Convention Center, Mt. Pleasant Whitesides School and Mt. Pleasant Jennie Moore/Laing School.

Here's information to know about the shuttles:

  • Buses to startline will run fro, 5-7 a.m.
  • Everyone will need race bib to board the bus.
  • No strollers allowed on buses.
  • Return buses will leave from downtown Charleston from 10 a.m. -1 p.m., to return participants to their parking areas.
