3600 grams of marijuana, 65 ecstasy pills found in man's car

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Summerville man was arrested after trying to flee from a traffic stop Monday evening.

According to Charleston County deputies, a K-9 unit tried to stop Joseph Smith on Dills Bluff Road on James Island around 7:30 p.m. after watching him speed and drive in the wrong lane. Smith refused to stop, a report states, instead turning on to Williams Road to lead deputies on a chase.

Near the end of the road, Smith bailed out of the car and ran. The officer's dog, Niko, was released and captured Smith, the report states.

During a search of his car, officers found more than 3,600 grams of marijuana, 65 ecstasy pills and $1,159 in cash in the car.

Smith was take to Medical University Hospital for treatment and then lodged in the Al Cannon Detention Center.

A second person in the car has not yet been identified or located, officials said.

Smith was charged with failure to stop for blue lights, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute ecstasy and resisting arrest.
