Columbia Obama Store owner arrested on sales tax evasion charges
Alleged tax evasion has landed the owner of a famed Columbia gas station in convenience store in jail.
Murad A. Alhanik, the owner of Obama Store, in Columbia, was arrested by the South Carolina Department of Revenue on four counts of sales tax evasion.
Officials say Alhanik evaded paying more than $136,000 in sales taxes from 2013 to 2016.
Alhanik filed monthly sales tax returns, reporting a total income of more than $970,000, but the Department of Revenue investigators reported Alhanik’s actual sales to me more than $2,680,000.
Alhanik is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. If convicted, he faces fines up to $10,000 and/or up to five years in prison for each count.
