A Johns Island woman has been arrested after detectives say she physically abused and stole money from her 71-year-old mother.

Kelly A. Adams, 52, was arrested Tuesday. She is in jail at the Al Cannon Detention Center, charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says it came to Adams’ mother’s home July 19 after getting a complaint from a concerned citizen.

The man told deputies the woman had been without food and her medicine for three days when he came by to check on her, and that he found feces on her bed.

The sheriff’s office says the victim told investigators Adams became physically abusive toward her over the July 4 weekend, two weeks prior.

Specifically, the victim said her daughter threw her to the ground, threw a pot of boiling water on her stomach, then doused her in bleach.

Deputies observed large scabbed-over wounds on the victim’s stomach. A doctor later said the injuries were consistent with chemical burns from something like bleach.

The sheriff’s office says the victim told them about other incidents where Adams pushed her to the ground, thrown knives at her, and threatened to slit her throat.

Additionally, the victim told deputies Adams kept prescription medication locked away which she needed, and had been stealing her money.

Investigators say the victim told them Adams stole her ATM cards, and racked up $1,600 in fraudulent charges, then later forced her write checks to Adams totaling $200.

The victim told the sheriff’s office her daughter stole her money to fund her drug habit, affidavits show.

Adams remains in jail, awaiting a bond hearing.
