Florence man sentenced for failing to register as sex offender

FLORENCE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A California man who moved to South Carolina in 2011 was sentenced this week for failing to register as a sex offender.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 48-year-old Whitney Daniel was sentenced to six months in prison and five years supervised release.

At a plea hearing, prosecutors showed that Daniel was convicted in 2003 of oral copulation with a minor and was required to register as a sex offender.

He last registered in 2009 while living in California, but an investigation revealed that Daniel had been living in Florence since 2011 without registering.

The case was investigated by agents of the United States Marshals Service.{} Assistant United States Attorney Bill Day of the Florence office prosecuted the case.
