Highway Patrol investigating pair of fatal Berkeley County crashes

      MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- South Carolina Highway Patrol officials are investigating a pair of deadly crashes that happened overnight in Berkeley County.

      In a crash on Highway 17A near Mitton Road, Troopers say a pedestrian was hit and killed shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday by a man driving a truck towing a boat.

      The Berkeley County Coroner identified the victim as 55-year-old Sedaris Mabry, of Moncks Corner. The death was ruled accidental.

      According to Troopers, 41-year-old Michael Stephens was driving the truck when it hit the pedestrian. He kept driving and was later arrested by Troopers, officials said.

      Stephens was charged with DUI, an open container violation, and leaving the scene of an accident. He is currently being held in the Berkeley County jail.

      Troopers are still investigating the crash.

      In a second crash, a car traveling south on Highway 45 near Wren Road ran off the roadway and hit several trees. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was killed in the crash.

      According to the Berkeley County Coroner, 30-year-old Andra Robinson died in the crash. The death was ruled accidental.
