Person found dead beside Colleton County road Wednesday, SLED investigating
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) —
The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating after a person was found dead beside a road in a remote part of Colleton County on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Colleton County Sheriff's Office, a logger working off Wiggins Road near the town of Green Pond called 9-1-1 Wednesday afternoon to report a person lying dead next to a metal gate near a wooded area.
Deputies investigating the report say the person's body was located about two miles from the Beaufort County line. Deputies say It appeared the body was placed there after being moved from a possible crime scene elsewhere.
Wiggins Road runs more than nine miles from U.S. Hwy. 17 toward the coast along the Combahee River. It travels through a very lightly populated and heavily wooded area, eventually turning into a dirt road before ending at a boat landing.
Colleton County has turned over the investigation to SLED. This is the second death investigation in large, mostly rural Colleton County in two days.
On Tuesday, the Colleton County Sheriff's Office says a man, a woman and their 13-year-old son were shot to death more than 30 miles away in the town of Ruffin. A 9-year-old girl was also shot, and remains hospitalized.
The sheriff's office has not said if it thinks the two cases are connected. SLED would not say if it is investigating the body found Wednesday as a homicide.
