Woman accused of stealing life insurance policies from 90-year-old West Ashley man
A 55-year-old woman is currently spending time at the Al Cannon Detention Center, after being accused of stealing more than $66,000 from a 90-year-old man she was hired to take care of.
Sonya Gail Turner is facing a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. According to a report provided by the Charleston Police Department, she's been the caretaker of the man she's accused of stealing from for at least four years.
The report states Turner recently moved into the man's home on Manchester Road in West Ashley with her boyfriend. The man told police he hadn't noticed anything odd and that Turner had access to his accounts to purchase items as needed.
But the man's family members say funds appeared to be misappropriated. They told police they believed Turner had deposited two life insurance checks ($66,516.26) into an unknown account.
The date of the initial report is Tuesday, September 19. Turner was booked at the detention center Wednesday, and as of 1:30 p.m. Thursday, was still awaiting a bond hearing.
