Charleston schools hosting community meeting on new East Cooper Stadium
Another community forum is scheduled to discuss a somewhat controversial regional stadium planned for high school sports and events in Mount Pleasant.
Charleston County School District officials have scheduled a community meeting to discuss the East of the Cooper regional stadium project on Wednesday, July 12, from 6-7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Laing Middle School in Mount Pleasant.
The $18 million, 14-acre facility will be built in the Carolina Park area of Mount Pleasant, and serve three high schools: Wando, the new Lucy Beckham High School, and a future Awendaw High School.
The stadium itself will seat 6,000 people, and host football, soccer, lacrosse games, as well as band events. The overall facility will consist of the stadium, 2,350 parking spots, crosswalks, traffic circles, and traffic lights. The facility is expected to be completed by the fall of 2018.
People living in the area have expressed worries about added traffic, noise and light pollution, along with pedestrian and community safety. Some people have even threatened to sue the school district to prevent the stadium from being built.
The school district has released projections on how the facility will affect traffic, as well as measures planned to reduce any possible nuisance impacts from noise and lights.
