Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office are investigating a deadly crash involving four men on Highway 17 near Chandler Road Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff's office says the men were in a Toyota Tundra pickup, and the driver quickly changed lanes to avoid hitting another vehicle slowing down in front of him.

When he did, the sheriff's office says the Tundra sideswiped a Chevrolet pickup, went off the road, hit a tree and turned on its side.

The driver died at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. The three passengers were taken to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries, where a second man later died.

The sheriff's office says the driver was wearing his seatbelt, and neither speed nor alcohol were a factor in the wreck. The driver and passenger of the Chevy truck were not hurt.

One northbound lane of Highway 17 was closed for quite a while as officers and emergency crews worked at the scene.

The sheriff's office and the Charleston County Coroner's Office are still investigating the wreck. The coroner's office has not yet released the causes of death or the victims' names.
