North Charleston police charge 18-year-old with murder in the shooting of Vaughn McFadden

Maurice Singleton (Charleston County Detention Center)

North Charleston Police Department investigators arrested and charged 18-year-old Maurice T. Singleton with murder in connection to the shooting death of 18-year-old Vaughn McFadden.

The arrest was announced Thursday afternoon. Singleton is expected to have a bond hearing on Friday morning.

The arrest comes less than a week after North Charleston police discovered a man found shot to death on railroad tracks in North Charleston on Friday, March 2.

It was the city's first murder of 2018.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office identified McFadden of North Charleston as the victim.

The incident prompted North Charleston Police Chief Reggie Burgess to take to the streets yesterday carrying a large sign that read "Stop the Violence.” Dozens joined the chief for a 30-minute march along several blocks of Dorchester Road during the rush of lunch-hour traffic.

Officials placed a digital sign on Dorchester Road asking for help to solve the crime.

Police said Thursday the arrest was due to their own investigation, not a tip.

Singleton is being charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission during a violent crime.

The investigation in ongoing.
