Charleston school board to vote on polarizing James Island bus lot location
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) —
Update: Motion to place D3 bus lot on land next to James Island Elementary failed Monday night in a 4-5 vote.
The Charleston County School Board is expected to vote on putting a new bus lot at James Island Elementary on Monday, district officials say.
The area is along Grimball Road off Folly Road. School board chairperson Kate Darby said up to 30 school buses will be parked at the lot if the motion is approved.
“Our whole goal is to get our students and children to school on time and safely,” Darby said. “If we don’t have a bus lot on James island, then those bus drivers have to go and get a bus in North Charleston or some other area, and that just doesn’t make sense.”
She said school board members initially voted on the location in November of 2014. She said a buffer of trees and vegetation should put fears to rest that the bus lot will be an eyesore.
“Once the buses are there and once the buffer has grown up, I don’t think people will even notice the busses are there,” Darby said.
Darby said a spot on Signal Point Road, the Halter property, and an area on Riverland Drive were other areas considered for a James Island bus lot.
Neighbors can still voice concerns at Monday’s school board meeting. It’s at district headquarters downtown at 5:15 p.m.
