Colleton County woman dead after home fire near town of Smoaks
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) —
A Colleton County woman is dead after being trapped in a house fire Wednesday morning.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy says the woman, who was bedridden, died after family members and rescue personnel were unable to reach her due to heavy smoke and flames.
Firefighters were alerted shortly after 6 a.m. to the fire, which McRoy says occurred at a home along the 3000 block of Berea Road outside the town of Smoaks. McRoy says firefighters arrived to find nearly 75 percent of the home covered in flames.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire, along with SLED, but McRoy says investigators do not suspect suspicious circumstances.
