Georgetown woman arrested for three counts of tax evasion

A Georgetown woman has been arrested for three counts of tax evasion.

Tawana Bailey of Georgetown was arrested Wednesday by South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) agents for owing $3,529 in South Carolina income taxes over three years, from 2014-2016.

"Bailey knowingly filed fraudulent state income tax returns under-reporting her total gross income by more than $88,000," according to a statement by The South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Bailey is currently being held at the Georgetown County Detention Center. If convicted, she faces fines up to $10,000 and/or up to five years in prison per count.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue reminds the public that it will take enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers.
