Haley proposes steps to VP to help deepen harbors

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is suggesting ways to get the nation's harbors deepened to handle the larger ships that will be calling with the widening of the Panama Canal in two years.

Haley's office on Friday released a letter she wrote earlier this month to Vice President Joe Biden.

Haley suggests the federal government stop using money from the federal Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund for other purposes. She said the fund's use should be expanded from just maintenance to deepening harbors as well. Haley also said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs to streamline its permitting process.

Haley wrote Biden after the vice president offered to help with the harbor deepening issues that Haley raised in a White House meeting with the nation's governors several weeks ago.
