UPDATE: Neighborhood quiet, cause of home explosion still unclear

One person has been hospitalized with severe burns after a reported explosion at a home in Moncks Corner Monday night.

Berkeley County EMS, the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department, and the Moncks Corner Police Department were dispatched to a home on Sheridan Court in response to the reported explosion shortly before 6:15 p.m., according to Moncks Corner Police Chief Rick Ollic.

Emergency personnel say they found a man suffering severe burns on his hands and face. The man has since been transported to the burn center in Augusta.

All homes in the surrounding area have been evacuated as a precaution while investigators work to determine what happened, Ollic says. Police are unsure at this time what caused the explosion.

The Charleston County Bomb Squad and HazMat teams were called to assist in the investigation, police say.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
