Man burned at Moncks Corner home was making an explosive
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story stated police said Eric Smith was making a bomb when it exploded. Moncks Corner Police Chief Rick Ollic has since clarified that the object was chemical in nature and not a bomb. He said it was explosive and had no wires.
Officials with the Moncks Corner Police Department say there is a criminal investigation related to the explosion at a home in Moncks Corner Monday night.
A release issued by the police department on Tuesday afternoon stated the man was injured while "attempting to make some sort of incendiary device." Police say charges may result from the investigation.
Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS, the FBI and the ATF responded to the incident. Police say the home was searched and various chemicals and fireworks were found.
Those living in the area were evacuated from their homes until the various agencies could determine the situation was safe.
The man burned in the explosion has been identified as 33-year-old Eric Smith. Officials say the majority of his burns were on his face and hands. His current status is unknown.
