Police respond to officer-involved shooting in Hardeeville
Hardeeville, S.C. (WTGS FOX 28) —
Authorities say they are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Hardeeville.
According to police, it happened on Sanders Road sometime after the Hardeeville Police Department responded to a domestic situation in the area.
“We got information from the caller that the male suspect was shooting a gun at his significant other. We’re not sure if it was the wife or the girlfriend,” said Sheriff Chris Malphrus with Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said, when officers arrived, a man walked out and started shooting. One Hardeeville officer, Celvin Grant, and one Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy, Justin Smith, were shot in the incident.
The injured officers were flown to Memorial Hospital in Savannah. Officials say they are currently in critical condition.
Sheriff Malphrus told FOX 28 that Grant received a bullet in the arm, underneath the armpit and chest area.
He said Smith was hit in the shoulder and in the hand, and may have suffered a shot to the arm as well.
FOX 28 spoke with a neighbor. She said the neighborhood is normally quiet and was scared to hear something happening so close.
"I heard the gunshots from my house. I was watching TV and we just heard, like, really loud gunshots. I thought it was fireworks because it kept like going really fast, but no, and then we came, we started seeing all the police," said Destiny Hernandez.
The name of the shooter has not been released at this time. Hernandez tells FOX 28 he was a "really calm person" and "not a bad person." Hernandez believes he would act differently and she believes he had taken drugs.
