SC port volume up sharply during March

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Container volume at the Port of Charleston is up sharply with March the busiest month at the port in almost six years.
The South Carolina Ports Authority board also learned Wednesday that almost 86,000 containers moved through the port last month. That's a 16 percent increase over February and an increase of 11 percent over March of last year. For the fiscal year which began last July 1, volume is up almost 5 percent.
Authority president and CEO Jim Newsome says that during the coming year the authority will simplify shipping contract terms and increase rates. He says while the shipping business is governed by the lowest cost of operations, ports in the Southeast, like Charleston, are a bargain compared to ports farther north.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press.
