Witnesses share accounts of North Charleston wreck that left three dead
People who witnessed the fatal wreck at the intersection of Rivers Avenue and Remount Road that killed three people said it was like a scene out of a movie.
“We heard the crash.” Barbara Broughton said it was a normal Friday night until she woke to the sound of a crash.
“Something pulled me out of my bed right before that crash,” Broughton said.
She had no idea—her stepdaughter, Jasmine Brooks, was a victim.
Jasmine’s sister, Shanecquia Brooks and her boyfriend Jai’von Pelzer, were also in the car. The coroner says all three died at the scene. “Two beautiful young loving girls, good girls.” added Broughton.
Brandy Bailey was on a break outside at the Sunoco gas station when the wreck happened. “I heard this car gun it’s engine. It exploded in midair, something you see on T.V., not in real life.”
Bailey said her daughter was at the store visiting her. Their first instinct was to help. “If it happens to you, you’d want somebody there.”
As of Monday night, the other driver remained in the hospital. Antwan Haskell, 26, is facing 3 counts of Felony Dui and a host of other charges.
Witnesses said they saw him drinking before he got behind the wheel. “It’s senseless, these people didn’t have to die, it was a senseless act, he was going too fast.”
Pelzer’s family said he was a loving person who had a rare sneaker collection. He and Shanecquia Brooks leave behind a 2-year-old daughter.
