Steve Bannon will be special guest at The Citadel Republican Society's Patriot Dinner
Steve Bannon will be The Citadel Republican Society’s special guest at this year’s Patriot Dinner.
Bannon, Donald Trump’s former White House Chief Strategist, will be on The Citadel’s campus at the Holliday Alumni Center Friday, November 10.
The club says they are the largest Republican club in the south with over 750 active members at their weekly, Friday noon meetings, according to their website. Their website also says they work on various campaigns, support conservative causes, and give back to the community.
Since the announcement of Bannon coming to The Citadel’s campus, the Chairman of Charleston County Democrats has issued a statement.
"We are disappointed that the Republican Society has invited Steve Bannon to come speak at the Citadel. Bannon is an unabashed white nationalist and racist and he is not welcome in Charleston. The Republican Society should be ashamed for bringing this racist bigot to the Holy City," says Brady Quirk-Garvan.
Larry Kobrovsky, the chairman of the Charleston County Republican Party, says that people should let Bannon speak and then draw their own conclusions.
"We should hear from everybody, but I reject any kind of racial nationalism: white, black or Hispanic," Kobrovsky says.
The Citadel Republican Society says Bannon will be speaking for free and at no cost to the club. The same happened when Donald Trump spoke at the dinner in 2015.
"Bannon is by all measures an impressive and interesting speaker," says Cadet Jonathan Clymer, Vice-President of Membership in a post on the club's Facebook page.
The club also says they pay the school for the use of their facilities and staff to prepare the dinner.
The dinner is not sponsored or hosted by The Citadel or The Citadel Alumni Association.
Tickets for the dinner are currently on sale on the club’s website with early bird tickets starting at $65 dollars and a couple’s package at $55 dollars.
Doors open at 6 p.m., and the dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.
