Deputy Cody Gooch - Calvin L. Middleton III (Berkeley County Sheriff's Office)

Calvin Lorenzo Middleton, III, 31, the suspect in shooting a police officer in Berkeley County last Friday, has been released from Trident Hospital and moved to the Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston County, according to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Middleton has been charged with three counts of attempted murder. Bond for three charges has been denied, according to SLED.

Middleton was later charged on March 22 with two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, SLED officials say.

According to a SLED reports, on Friday, March 2 at 5:30 a.m., deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic dispute involving a firearm at 1055 Pine Tree Drive in the Saint Stephens area of Berkeley County.

The male suspect in the incident had left the area in a vehicle, the report states. Berkeley County Deputy Cody Gooch conducted a traffic stop on the suspect, a police report states.

As Deputy Gooch was approaching the vehicle, the driver opened the driver's door and shot Deputy Gooch. Deputy Gooch and two others deputies returned fire, the SLED report states.

The suspect, who had been shot, was apprehended a short distance away.

The suspect was identified as Middleton. Both the deputy and the suspect were transported to Trident Hospital in North Charleston for treatment.

Shortly after the incident, several truckloads of dogs were taken away from the suspect's property on Pine Tree Drive.

Animal control removed 16 dogs from the suspect's home on Pine Tree Drive in St Stephen. There were 14 pit bulls recovered and 2 cattle dogs, all of them brought to the Berkeley Animal Center the afternoon of the incident.
