Water main break at East Bay & Market streets leaves behind huge pothole

A water line broke Sunday afternoon near the intersection of S. Market and E. Bay streets in Charleston, leading to street closures and temporary flooding, and leaving behind a massive pothole.

All lanes of East Bay and S. Market between Cumberland and State streets remained closed as of 4:30 Sunday, while crews worked to repair the water main and damage caused by its break.

Short term flooding in the area had since subsided.

Broad and Rutledge streets were also closed Sunday after a water main break there. Officials anticipate that being fixed around 7-8 p.m.

City officials say neither break is related to Hurricane Irma or any of its effects.
