Michael Slager appealing prison sentence
Attorneys for ex-North Charleston Police officer Michael Slager have filed a notice of appeal on Slager's behalf regarding his prison sentence.
Federal judge David Norton on Dec. 7 sentenced Slager to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of Walter Scott. Norton ruled Slager had committed second-degree murder when he shot and killed Scott.
Particulars regarding Slager's alleged grounds for appeal have not yet been released to the public. The filing comes a day before the court-imposed deadline.
Slager pleaded guilty in May 2017 to depriving Scott of his civil rights through excessive force under the color of law.
Scott was arrested days after he fired eight shots at Scott with his service pistol following traffic stop off Remount Road, April 4, 2015.
