Barred Owl crashes into glass wall of downtown Portland Apple Store
PORTLAND, Ore. – An owl on the hunt in downtown Portland crashed into the glass wall of the Apple Store this week, leaving the bird dazed on the sidewalk after a nearly 20-foot fall, the Audubon Society of Portland said.
The Barred Owl is now in the care of Audubon staff, who remain hopeful it will make a full recovery.
Apple Store employees found the bird in the morning, and after giving it a barrier of chairs they called the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Audubon said ODFW’s Susan Barnes put the stunned owl in a box and brought it to the Audubon Society’s Wildlife Care Center. An evaluation found that the owl didn’t have any broken bones and maintained a full range of motion.
Audubon Society officials said window strikes often prove to be fatal. They state the Central City Plan 2035 that’s up for consideration by the Portland City Council includes a requirement for building designs that would reduce hazards to birds.
The non-profit has more information on how to prevent bird window strikes on its website.
