47th Annual Hendrick Charleston Sertoma Football Classic kicks off this week
Many may argue it's the official kickoff to the high school football season in the Lowcountry. With 46 years of preseason matchups featuring some of the best high school football teams in South Carolina, it's hard to argue otherwise.
The 47th Annual Hendrick Charleston Sertoma Football Classic will kick off on Thursday, August 10 with six matchups, including teams high school football enthusiasts have marked as capable of winning it all in their region, conference or on the state level.
Friday, August 11 will bring another five games for fans salivating over the chance to smell fresh cut grass, sit under some of the brightest lights in the area and watch the institutions of their yesteryear battle for preseason bragging rights. All games will be played at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium.
While it's a smaller event than years past, there will be 21 local teams participating this season. Wando and James Island are restricted from playing by the South Carolina High School League after a fight during their regular season game last year. Dorchester County schools will again skip the Sertoma Classic this year, for the second year of their own jamboree.
Tickets are on sale via local participating high school cheerleading teams and online at CharlestonSertoma.org. General admission tickets are $12. Gates open at 4 p.m. and kick off is at 5 p.m.
VIP tickets are available for $50 per person and allow ticket-holders the opportunity to enjoy the games from the air-conditioned fourth-floor club level of Johnson Hagood Stadium. The VIP experience includes a complimentary buffet and soft drinks.
One dollar from each ticket sold goes back to both the schools and football teams. The remainder of the proceeds benefit local children’s charities.
