The pads are about to start popping, as Lowcountry high school football teams begin fall camp and prepare for full contact practice and games.

The risk of concussions comes with the territory on the gridiron, but what used to be thought of simply as "getting your bell rung" is now treated much more seriously, given the long term health effects doctors now know concussions can cause.

In response, many Lowcountry football teams have started using technology to protect their players now, and hopefully in the future.

It's called the baseline concussion test. Nearly every high school in the Tri-county area has their athletes take it before they compete.
