NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One young man has discovered a ton of success in a short period of time on the mats at Academic Magnet High School.
Academic Magnet's Josh McDermett's success in wrestling has been full of non-stop action. And for a guy who didn't discover wrestling until he was a freshman in high school, it's quite a feat for him to have already logged his 100th win.
Last season as a junior, he won the state title in the 126-pound weight class.
"My first reaction was shock. Amazing I was able to get there in three years," he said.
Now that he's hit 100 wins and picked up a state title, McDermett is looking to pick up a second title as a senior. But that goal comes with the added duty of being a team leader.
"I think it's easier," he said. "Teammates see what I've done and if they put in the work, they can be good."
And putting in the hard work to be a wrestler has enlightened McDermett.
He went from not knowing anything to being a state champ in three years, a feat that showed him hard work and dedication in anything in life can always pay off.
"It's interesting when you don't know something. You go out and figure it out and master it. It's a fulfilling thing to do," he said.
