COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Steve Spurrier says No. 9 South Carolina's home stadium has been given a makeover since he arrived almost a decade ago. He hopes to add a Southeastern Conference championship banner to the decorations this season.

The Gamecocks open the season Thursday night against No. 21 Texas A&M at Williams-Brice Stadium, where South Carolina has a nation-best home streak of 18 victories.

It's part of an unprecedented run of success for the former SEC doormats - Spurrier's predecessor Lou Holtz went 0-11 at South Carolina in 1999 - with three straight 11-2 seasons. Spurrier's done it differently than his pass-happy days leading Florida in the 1990s, counting on ball control and stout defense.

Expect a similar plan this time with the Aggies breaking in first-year starting quarterback Kenny Hill.
