Dawn Staley and team honored with parade, thousands of fans and new street
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - The City of Columbia hosted a parade Sunday to celebrate the University of South Carolina women's basketball team's National Championship win. The parade route started on Main Street and ended at the Statehouse where speakers, including Coach Dawn Staley, spoke to a crowd of thousands.
"God is all things. My cup runneth over," said Staley as she spoke her first words at the podium. The coach thanked God, her team and all the fans for their support.
Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin named a portion of Lincoln Street leading to the Colonial Life Arena "Dawn Staley Way" at the ceremony.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey also spoke at the celebration. Athletic Director Ray Tanner said Sankey turned down front-row seats on the 18th hole at the Masters to attend the parade.
"This is just the beginning," said Staley.
