Preparing a survival kit for hurricanes

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- How ready are you the next time a storm strikes? You probably have some of the basics, but are you ready to pack up your most important belongings, try to protect your house and leave for possibly weeks?

It seems overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be There are two great hurricane survival kits that you need to consider.

The first survival kit is from East Cooper Community Outreach. Everything that you need is in one container, from gloves to tape, toilet paper and even a first-aid kit.

There is also a radio and flashlight that doesn't need batteries.

This kit would be good for one person for a few days, but you'll be surprised how much use you'll get out of the duct tape.

But what if you need a larger survival kit for your entire family?

Consider a larger one for the entire family by Lowe's. The company also has a survival guide on its website. There are all sorts of pointers on preparing for your hurricane and how to stay safe.

Of course, you'll need the essentials as well as many other items.

"We do have your essentials like your batteries, your flashlight, first aid kit, there's also things you want to think about for clean up like trash bags, shovels, tarps and things like that," said Davis.

Lowe's has several types of generators from gas to solar. They have chainsaws as well. When using a chainsaw, safety is a must.

From tie downs to plastic tarps to Clorox and bug spray, Lowe's carries it all. Don't forget the duct tape either - it's that fix-all tool that is a must have.

"Instead of having an individual hand held flashlight for everyone in the family, you can usually if you are sitting around one source," said Davis. "You can have one source light instead of a bunch of different ones."

With so much to choose from, it can be confusing and the price can add up.

Make sure you go by that check list that will help you make the right decision for you and your family.

What about the costs of that basic kit that we can all purchase?

"You can probably start a good kit with a $100," said Davis.

One of the things that you want to make sure you have for yourself and the entire family is plenty of water. Have gallons of water for everyone.

Make sure you fill your tub full of water, too. It can be used for cleaning and it can also be used for flushing of the toilet because water pressure may be down in your area and you'll need that for flushing the toilet.

Also if filtered properly it can be used for drinking.
