4 of 5 'Palmetto's Finest' located in Lowcountry

    COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- Four of the five schools names Palmetto's Finest are located in the Lowcountry.

    They are:

    • Fort Dorchester Elementary in Summerville, Dorchester District Two
    • Hammond Hill Elementary in North Augusta, Aiken County Schools
    • Hanahan Middle in Hanahan, Berkeley County Schools
    • Ashley Ridge High in Summerville, Dorchester District Two
    • Marrington Middle School of the Arts in Goose Creek, Berkeley County Schools

    The schools spent the day Monday awaiting word from Columbia.

    "The Palmetto's Finest award winners represent the many innovative schools in our state," said SCASA's Molly Spearman. "They are community centers of learning where students are given personalized instruction and high expectations."

    Presenting the awards to the four winners were Dr. David Mathis, Chairman of the Palmetto's Finest Committee, Dr. David Blackmon, Chair, SC State Board of Education, Amy McAllister, SC State Teacher of the Year, and SCASA President Dr. Connie Long.{}

    "We are incredibly proud of Hanahan Middle School and Marrington Middle School of the Arts for meeting the high standards of this prestigious award," stated Dr. Rodney Thompson, superintendent of Berkeley County School District.{} "Today marks the first time our district has had a school earn the Palmetto's Finest designation.{} As our schools have been making tremendous academic gains, we've encouraged our schools to participate in the application process.{} For both of these schools, this honor reflects the hard work of students, outstanding school leadership, and ongoing collaboration among staff, parents, and community leaders."
