CSO hosts highest grossing concert in its history

From The Charleston Symphony Orchestra

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Symphony Orchestra's (CSO) positive momentum for the season continues. With ninety-nine percent of the Gaillard Auditorium's capacity sold at 2,706 tickets, the February 11th Masterworks performance was the highest grossing concert in CSO history.

The record-breaking concert featured Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, the South Carolina premiere of a violin concerto by local composer Edward Hart, and CSO Concertmaster Yuriy Bekker performing on a 1686 Stradivarius violin.

In addition to the Masterworks success, the CSO has reached attendance capacity at several other concerts this season. The most recent Chamber Orchestra Series concert "Mozart in Prague" on January 7, 2012, at the Dock Street Theatre was a sold-out event. A performance of Handel's Messiah on December 20, 2011 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist also sold one-hundred percent of the venue's capacity. The Messiah performance also featured the CSO Chorus.

An upcoming Chamber Orchestra concert, "From Salzburg with Love," takes place on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Dock Street Theatre. At the time of this announcement, tickets were already sold out one week in advance. It is the final concert in that series for the 2011-12 season.

"The CSO hasn't seen attendance levels like this since the 1990s," said Executive Director Daniel Beckley.

"The organization is definitely feeling the effects of an upswing. We are encouraging everyone to buy in advance for our upcoming concerts. That is really the only way to ensure you have a seat," Beckley continued.

All Masterworks, Pops, Chamber Orchestra, and Chamber Music concert tickets are available for advance purchase. The next Masterworks concert, featuring guest cellist Joshua Roman, is Saturday, March 3, 2012. The concert will feature Roman as soloist on works by Dvok and Tchaikovsky. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.CharlestonSymphony.org, by calling the CSO at (843) 723-7528, and at the Gaillard Auditorium Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet.

The CSO will announce its 2012-13 season in April.
