Identity released of deceased Carnival Fantasy cruiser

    CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man who died while snorkeling in Bermuda as part of a Carnival Fantasy cruise has been identified.

    The Bermuda Police Service released on Wednesday the man is 79-year-old Joe Alston of Statesboro, Georgia. Officials with the police service said the death appeared to be a drowning based on a preliminary autopsy.

    The Carnival Fantasy cruiser died on Sunday while snorkeling in waters off the West End of Bermuda.

    Officials say the man was part of a tour group and swimming approximately a mile offshore at the time of the incident.

    Police said he was taken ashore and attended to by EMTs, but pronounced dead by a physician at 12:55 p.m.

    The Fantasy set out from Charleston and arrived at Dockyard in Bermuda on Saturday.

    It left Bermuda en route back to Charleston on Tuesday.
