Mount Pleasant police make arrest in weekend homicide

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Mount Pleasant Police have arrested a man they said{}was responsible for a homicide early Saturday morning.

According to officials, the murder happened around 2:30 a.m. in the Snowden community, off Long Point Road near Whipple Road.

Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jimmy Coaxum. They said he was arrested in Fayetteville, N.C. and will be extradited back to Charleston.Coaxum is an acquaintance of the victim, police added.

According to the 911 recordings released by officials, a witness awoke to find Coaxum in the home. He told dispatch operators he saw Coaxum go outside and said "I wasn't here."

When the witness checked on the victim, he said he found her unresponsive with a wound to her head.

Friends of victim Tameka Mitchell, 38, said she was a dedicated single mother of four children and grandmother of one child. They said she had planned to take the family to Atlanta for her son's basketball game this weekend, but the game was canceled at the last minute.Neighbors said she had lived in the Snowden neighborhood home for about two years. Mitchell was a member of Royal Baptist Church in North Charleston, church members said.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office said Mitchell died from a single gunshot wound.
