North Charleston, Beaufort school make transparency list

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- The City of North Charleston and Beaufort County Schools were among a group of agencies across the state recognized nationally for their transparency efforts.{}

The group, made up of two cities, two counties and three school districts, was awarded Sunny Awards from the Sunshine Review, a nonprofit that pushes for government transparency.

Along with North Charleston and Beaufort County Schools, the city of Rock Hill, Aiken and Anderson counties, and Pickens and York County 3 school districts were selected as 2013 award winners.

"The winners of the Sunny Awards are cities, counties and school districts that proactively share the public information that empowers citizens and keeps government accountable to the people," Michael Barnhart, president of Sunshine Review, said in a statement.

According to the group, the ratings are based on a 10-point list that entails budgets, meetings, lobbying, financial audits, contracts, academics and public records.

The winners selected all earned an A rating, the group said.
