SOUTH CAROLINA (WCIV)-- The number of people dying in traffic related accidents is on the rise in South Carolina.
The Department of Public Safety says the rise is on the heels of three years of declines. According to DPS statistics, 581 people died on South Carolina roads between January 1 and September 15 of this year. That's up by 20 from the same time frame last year.
Not only have vehicle accidents been on the rise, but there has also been an increase in pedestrian and motorcycle deaths since 2010. A spokesman for the SC Highway Patrol says the increase in pedestrian and motorcycle deaths could be because there are more on the road. Higher gas prices and good weather may have contributed to move people getting around by foot or their motorcycles.
